The Virgin Spring

“Ravished innocence... brings terrible revenge!”

Töre (Max von Sydow) and Märeta (Birgitta Valberg) are devout Christians in medieval Sweden, and they want their only daughter, the virginal Karin (Birgitta Pettersson), to carry candles to a distant church. Ingmar Bergman sends her into the woods with their foster daughter Ingeri (Gunnel Lindblom). On the road they meet herdsmen who will end up at her father's door, and whatever he does then, he does with a household that has already lost its child.
