Karla Zachanassian (Ingrid Bergman) was run out of her hometown as a pregnant teenager after Serge Miller (Anthony Quinn) refused to marry her. Now she comes back a multi-millionaire, and the town lays out a red carpet, hoping her fortune will lift it. Bernhard Wicki keeps Karla and Serge circling each other at the center, two people tied together by the child and the years since.
