A travelling theatrical troupe rolls through the French countryside in the 17th century, and Serafina (Ornella Muti), Pulcinella (Massimo Troisi) and Isabella (Emmanuelle Béart) leave a trail of broken hearts at every stop. Ettore Scola adapts Théophile Gautier's 1863 novel, and the Baron de Sigognac (Vincent Perez) is drawn into the company. The wagons creak down the country roads, and the actors sit among their painted costumes.
