The duke's first attempt to fortify a village on the coast of 11th-century Normandy has failed, and the barbarians at the border are close. He sends Chrysagon (Charlton Heston), a knight, to start again, with Bors (Richard Boone) at his side. Franklin J. Schaffner tracks a man whose duty to his lord pulls against his love for Bronwyn (Rosemary Forsyth), a local woman, and the film treats that as a question of what a soldier can keep for himself.
