General Pang Qingyun (Jet Li) wants only to survive the Taiping Rebellion, which has already cost him his army and nearly his life. A young woman, Lian (Xu Jinglei), finds him wounded, and he swears a blood oath with two other men, Zhao Er-Hu (Andy Lau) and Jiang Wu-Yang (Takeshi Kaneshiro), to put down the rebels. Peter Chan stages the 1860s war at close range, in mud and smoke, and keeps the camera on the three brothers.
