In the mid-19th century, a column of settler families sets out overland toward the western territories, led by Senator William J. Tadlock (Kirk Douglas). He is a principled, demanding man who is hard on himself and harder on everyone in his wagon train, and Lije Evans (Richard Widmark) bristles at his ways. Andrew V. McLaglen films the long crossing as a wide procession of wagons and faces, with Dick Summers (Robert Mitchum) scouting ahead.
