The Well-Digger's Daughter

(1940)Directed by Marcel Pagnol142 minDrama, Romance, Comedy
“The new triumph by the star and director of "The Baker's Wife".”

Pascal Amoretti (Raimu) is a well-digger in the south of France, a widower raising six daughters who expects each of them to behave. Marcel Pagnol sets his eldest, Patricia (Josette Day), between two suitors, the humble Félipe Rambert (Fernandel) and the well-off Mazel family's son, and then sends the young men off to war, leaving her pregnant. What her father will say, and how long he can hold out against his own child, is where the story ends up.
