“I need to know that I have done one thing right with my life.”

Charlie (Brendan Fraser) teaches online writing classes from his sofa with the camera switched off, so his students never see how large he has become. He has not seen his teenage daughter Ellie (Sadie Sink) in eight years, and he invites her back into his life. Darren Aronofsky keeps the story inside Charlie's apartment, where the question is whether people can be forgiven for leaving.
