Earl C. Conrad (Richard Dix) is a guilt-ridden man who blames himself for his wife's death. He pays an assassin to kill him, then learns she isn't dead at all, and the killer (J. Carrol Naish) is already on his trail with no way to call the job off. William Castle builds the film around a plain, ugly fact: a man can set a death in motion and lose the power to stop it.
