The village in Bukovina is claimed by Romania, then Poland, then Ukraine, and the Dzvonar family has to live under each flag. When the war arrives, Petro (Ivan Mykolaichuk) and his relatives each pick a different master, some even serving the Soviets. Yurii Illienko follows the marriages, births and deaths of one large household, and its brothers are already choosing sides against one another.
