Sergeant Neil Howie (Edward Woodward) flies a seaplane to the remote Scottish island of Summerisle to look for a missing girl. The villagers say she never existed, and Howie, a devout Christian, is appalled to find they have given up his faith for Celtic paganism under Lord Summerisle (Christopher Lee). Robin Hardy shoots it in flat daylight and plain faces, so the strangeness never has a shadow to hide in.
