Shack Twala (Sidney Poitier) walks out of a South African prison after ten years, a nationalist freed by the Supreme Court who is back on the run within hours. With Rina Van Niekirk, his lawyer, and Jim Keogh (Michael Caine), a visiting British engineer, he heads for Capetown to recover diamonds meant to fund the cause. Ralph Nelson sends Major Horn (Nicol Williamson) after them, and the film is about a country where a court order means nothing on the road.
