Jiro Horikoshi (Hideaki Anno) dreams of designing beautiful aircraft, though he has no hands to build them himself. In 1920s Japan, he pursues the dream anyway, sketching planes and studying aerodynamics while the country moves toward war. What he creates will carry people through the sky, but also toward a fate neither he nor the woman he loves can stop.
