The story begins in the early years of U.S. Naval aviation, when pilots like Frank "Spig" Wead (John Wayne) flew fragile planes and shared the barracks with friends such as "Jughead" Carson (Dan Dailey). It follows Wead from the cockpit to a second career as a Hollywood screenwriter, with Min Wead (Maureen O'Hara) beside him. John Ford made it for his friend Wead, shooting the Navy years the way a man remembers a crowd of old shipmates.
