Kate Croy (Helena Bonham Carter) wants two things at once: Merton Densher (Linus Roache), the struggling journalist she has secretly promised herself to, and the money her disapproving Aunt Maude (Charlotte Rampling) controls. Then she meets Millie Theale (Alison Elliott), a terminally ill American heiress traveling through Europe. Iain Softley builds the film around the three of them, and what Kate asks of Merton and Millie ties each to the other.
