A tornado sweeps Dorothy Gale (Judy Garland) from her Kansas farm into a strange country where she meets a Scarecrow (Ray Bolger), a Tin Man (Jack Haley), and a Cowardly Lion (Bert Lahr). Together they travel to find the Wizard of Oz (Frank Morgan), the only one who might send her home. By the time Dorothy reaches him, she has already found in her three companions the very things each one searched for.
