Arthur Kidd (Adrian Rawlins) is a young solicitor who wants to prove himself, and the job of settling a dead widow's estate looks like an easy way to do it. His employers send him to a small coastal English town, where the locals go quiet whenever the woman's name comes up. Herbert Wise made this for television, adapting Susan Hill's novel, and he lets the dread build slowly.
