The Woman in the Rumor

Hatsuko Mabuchi (Kinuyo Tanaka) runs a brothel in Kyoto, a house of women and rooms that she manages with a steady, practiced hand. Her daughter Yukiko (Yoshiko Kuga) comes home from Tokyo after a traumatic experience and learns what her mother does for a living, which upsets her badly. Kenji Mizoguchi sets the two women in the same house, close enough to touch and unable to speak plainly.
