“CAUGHT IN THE BLACK SPELL OF TERROR!”

Walter Hartright (Gig Young), a young painter, takes a position as drawing master at an English estate, and meets a strange woman dressed in white on a forest path. She looks very like his pupil Laura Fairlie (Eleanor Parker). Peter Godfrey fills the house with a hypochondriac who cannot bear a sound and Count Fosco (Sydney Greenstreet), who has plans for them all, and Walter walks back to the forest each evening.
