Brad Collins (Robert Ryan) is a San Francisco shipping executive with a new marriage to Nan (Laraine Day) and a past he has tried to bury. Communists who know him as Frank Johnson blackmail him into spying for them, and Robert Stevenson stages the pressure as a threat that follows him from the waterfront into his own home. Brad sits at his desk with a telephone he does not want to answer.
