Jody Baxter (Claude Jarman Jr.) talks his parents into letting him keep a young deer he has taken in. His father, Penny (Gregory Peck), is willing, but Jody's mother, Orry (Jane Wyman), is wary of another mouth to feed. Clarence Brown sets the boy and his pet between two parents who love him differently, and the film waits to see which of them he will take after.
