“Guilty secrets. Shocking scandals. All in a day's work for one Philadelphian lawyer.”

Anthony Judson Lawrence (Paul Newman) is a young lawyer in 1950s Philadelphia with real talent and not much money, working his way up through the city's old society firms. Vincent Sherman follows him through dinners and partnership talk, and a murder case involving his friend Chester pulls him one way while his career pulls another. Meanwhile Joan (Barbara Rush), his fiancée, waits to see which of those pulls will win out.
