There Was a Father

Shuhei Horikawa (Chishū Ryū), a schoolteacher with little money, takes on raising his young son Ryohei alone. Yasujirō Ozu follows the two through the years, with Shuhei's work and the boy's schooling pulling them into different towns. Ryohei, played as a boy by Haruhiko Tsuda and later by Shūji Sano, keeps his father's face in his mind through all of it.
