A silver prospector named Daniel Plainview (Daniel Day-Lewis) claws his way into oil fields during the California boom, driven by an appetite that no claim can fill. He builds an empire on land where Paul Sunday (Paul Dano), a preacher's twin, promises him riches. Paul Thomas Anderson watches Plainview accumulate everything and become, in the process, someone hollowed out by the very hunger that made him.
