A tip reaches a failed silver miner: there is oil sitting under a patch of ranch land in California, and the owners have no idea. Daniel Plainview (Daniel Day-Lewis) arrives with his young son H.W. (Dillon Freasier) at his side, a family man's face for buying properties cheap, and meets Eli Sunday (Paul Dano), a local preacher who doesn't trust him. Paul Thomas Anderson watches Plainview take what he wants, and Day-Lewis makes the hunger look like all he has left.
