Captain Galich (Oleg Borisov) wants one thing from the day, and it is the leave his men were promised. Then roadworks under a small village uncover a stockpile of World War II bombshells, and his unit is sent in to clear them out. Tarkovsky and Aleksandr Gordon, students at VGIK when they made it, set Galich beside Col. Gvelesiani (Aleksei Alekseyev), two officers sharing a job where one wrong move ends it for both.
