“Were they the innocent victims of a whispering campaign?”

Martha Dobie (Miriam Hopkins) and Karen Wright (Merle Oberon) are close friends who open a private boarding school together, with help from the local doctor, Joe Cardin (Joel McCrea). The school fills with students, and one of them is a troublemaker whose scandalous lie reaches the trio. William Wyler, working from Lillian Hellman's script, ends on the school's quiet rooms and the three people it was built for.
