A prostitute is found murdered in San Francisco, and Virgil Tibbs (Sidney Poitier), the city's homicide detective, takes the case. Gordon Douglas follows him through grainy daylight interviews, and the trail keeps bending toward Logan Sharpe (Martin Landau), a preacher and Tibbs's close friend. Tibbs has to keep working the file while the man he trusts sits on the other side of it.
