The border country of 1916 is where the army chases Pancho Villa's raiders across the Mexican line. Major Thomas Thorn (Gary Cooper) has been given the job of picking soldiers for the Congressional Medal of Honor, though he carries a charge of cowardice himself. Robert Rossen puts Thorn in the saddle beside the men he is judging, Sgt. John Chawk (Van Heflin) and Lt. William Fowler (Tab Hunter) among them, with one question about his own nerve still unanswered.
