In 1988 Los Angeles, jobs are scarce and shantytowns fill the empty lots. John Nada (Roddy Piper), a drifter carrying everything he owns, finds a box of sunglasses that show him what the billboards and magazines are really saying, and who is standing among the people around him. John Carpenter follows him as a man with no money and no allies decides to tell everyone, with the aliens already in control of the city.
