A robbery has left Bowie Bowers (Farley Granger) wounded and on the run, and the convicts he escaped with are still close behind. Then he meets Keechie (Cathy O'Donnell), the woman who nurses him back to health. Nicholas Ray, in his first film as director, lets the two take hold of each other in a world with no room for them, wanting only an ordinary life together.
