A retired judge in New York has taken to dressing as Sherlock Holmes and hunting for a Moriarty nobody else can see. Justin Playfair (George C. Scott) is declared unfit by his brother Blevins, who is more worried about the family money than about Justin, and a psychiatrist is brought in. Her name is Dr. Mildred Watson (Joanne Woodward), and Anthony Harvey follows the two of them as she starts out treating him and ends up walking beside him.
