Larry Ballentine (Robert Young) is a philandering stockbroker, and now he sits on trial for the murder of his girlfriend. From the witness stand he tells the court what really happened, a string of events he knows will sound improbable to anyone listening. Irving Pichel lays out the women in his life one by one, Greta (Rita Johnson) as his wife and Verna (Susan Hayward) and Janice (Jane Greer) as the others, and every one of those ties is already coming apart.
