In the rain-slicked, neon-lit streets of 1981 Chicago, Frank (James Caan) cracks safes and lifts diamonds for a living. He has a plan to get out, with a house, a family and enough money to stop. Michael Mann follows him into one last job for a gangster (Robert Prosky), and the future Frank has pictured depends on Jessie (Tuesday Weld), the woman he wants beside him.
