Nick Garcos (Richard Conte) comes home from the war in 1949 meaning to marry his girlfriend Polly Faber (Barbara Lawrence). Instead he finds his father beaten and robbed by Mike Figlia (Lee J. Cobb), a trucker with mob ties. Jules Dassin follows Nick into the late-night produce trade, where a hard-headed man set on revenge keeps getting pulled further in.
