In Paris, Nathalie Chazeaux (Isabelle Huppert) teaches philosophy at a high school and loves handing her students the pleasure of thinking. She also looks after her possessive mother, Yvette (Édith Scob), and keeps up with former students, until her husband Heinz (André Marcon) says he is leaving her for another woman. Mia Hansen-Løve follows Nathalie as she must build a life of her own, with the old structure gone.
