In 1934 New York, a European princess arrives to win a loan that her small country badly needs. Then she comes down with the mumps, and Nancy Lane (Sylvia Sidney), an actress who looks exactly like her, is hired to stand in. Marion Gering follows her through the city's grand rooms, with Porter Madison III (Cary Grant) beside her, and Nancy wears Catterina's crown.
