In the 1950s, Caroline (Ellen Barkin) and her teenage son Toby (Leonardo DiCaprio) leave a hard past behind and head for Seattle, hoping for a better life. Caroline meets Dwight (Robert De Niro), a man who seems polite, and the two of them move into his house. Michael Caton-Jones keeps Toby at the edge of the room, a boy with his eyes on the door.
