“A Sweeping Panorama of Living”

Frank Gibbons (Robert Newton) comes home from the First World War wanting a steady house of his own, and he finds one in a new terraced home in Clapham, where his wife Ethel (Celia Johnson), his mother-in-law Mrs. Flint (Amy Veness), and his sister-in-law Aunt Sylvia (Alison Leggatt) move in with him. David Lean follows the household through two decades of births, quarrels and weddings. Ordinary lives are given the same weight as history.
