Ruth Beckett (Karen Meagher) is a young woman in Sheffield, going out with Jimmy Kemp (Reece Dinsdale) and finding out she is pregnant. Mick Jackson follows her and the Kemp family through ordinary weeks of wedding plans and work, while news of a crisis between the United States and the Soviet Union plays on televisions in the background. Ruth is trying to make a life with Jimmy in a city that still believes it has time.
