Lucas Doolin (Robert Mitchum), called Luke, runs moonshine through the Tennessee hills in fast cars for his father Vernon, and he won't let his younger brother Robin ride along. Arthur Ripley puts Luke between Kogan, an out-of-town gangster after a piece of the local trade, and Treasury agent Barrett, who wants the stills gone. It is about a man defending a way of making a living that is already running out of road.
