A composer named Jerome Kern (Robert Walker) is sitting on a catalog of songs the whole country already knows by heart, and MGM has built a Technicolor biography around him. Richard Whorf stages the music in big production numbers, with Judy Garland (as Marilyn Miller) and Kathryn Grayson (as Magnolia Hawks) singing his best-known tunes, plus a condensed run of Show Boat. Kern worked on it but died before it was finished, and the film was left to carry his name.
