Timbuktu

(2014)Directed by Abderrahmane Sissako96 minDrama, War
“A song for freedom.”

Militant Islamic rebels have taken Timbuktu and imposed Sharia on a city that never asked for it, and then, just outside town, a cattleman kills a fisherman. Kidane (Ibrahim Ahmed) lives in the dunes with his wife Satima (Toulou Kiki) and their daughter Toya (Layla Walet Mohamed), until that killing pulls his household into the occupiers' rules. Abderrahmane Sissako stays close to the family, and the film is mostly about what the three of them hold onto together.
