Time Regained

A writer lies dying in France in the early 1920s, and the photographs laid out near him start to bring people back: Odette (Catherine Deneuve), Gilberte (Emmanuelle Béart), the Baron de Charlus (John Malkovich), Saint-Loup (Pascal Greggory). Raúl Ruiz adapts the last volume of Proust's In Search of Lost Time, and the faces and rooms of the past crowd in on him. The film treats memory as the one place where lost people are still present.
