To Be or Not to Be

(1942)Directed by Ernst Lubitsch99 minComedy, War, Romance
“The Picture Everyone Wants to See”

A young Polish airman, Lieut. Stanislav Sobinski (Robert Stack), has found out that a German spy in Warsaw holds the names of Polish resistance families, and he has to reach that man first. The trail leads him to a theatre troupe, where Maria Tura (Carole Lombard) and her husband Joseph (Jack Benny) are rehearsing. Lubitsch sets the occupation beside greasepaint, and Joseph, a ham who thinks the whole city comes to see him, is pulled into the hunt.
