To Gillian on Her 37th Birthday

“Some love lasts a lifetime. Real love lasts forever.”

David Lewis (Peter Gallagher) still talks to his wife Gillian (Michelle Pfeiffer), who died two years ago, and every night he walks the beach to find her. Meanwhile his teenage daughter Rachel (Claire Danes) and the rest of the family wait for him to come back to the present. Michael Pressman, working from David E. Kelley's script, plays the beach scenes plainly, with the dead woman standing as solid as anyone living.
