To Joy
In a Swedish orchestra in 1950, the violinist Stig Eriksson (Stig Olin) and his wife Marta Olsson (Maj-Britt Nilsson) play side by side. Ingmar Bergman tells their marriage in flashback, with Beethoven's Ninth running underneath it. Stig is afraid he will never be more than a competent player, and that fear keeps pulling him away from the woman he plays beside.
