Mark Thackeray (Sidney Poitier), an engineer from British Guiana, takes a teaching job at a London East End school when no engineering work comes through. His final-year class is loud, bored and openly hostile, led by the sullen Denham (Christian Roberts), and they have run off teachers before him. James Clavell sets the room between Mark and his pupils, among them Pamela Dare (Judy Geeson) and Babs (Lulu), where respect has to be earned a little at a time.
