Ellen (Lily Collins) is twenty years old and has been through several treatment programs for anorexia, and she has no plan to get better. Her family sends her to Dr. William Beckham (Keanu Reeves), an unconventional doctor who runs a group home and tells his patients that no one will do the work for them. Marti Noxon builds the film around a plain question of who gets to decide whether a person lives, and it sits in every meal Ellen has to face.
