To the Wonder

What pulls Neil (Ben Affleck) across an ocean is never fully explained: he falls in love with Marina (Olga Kurylenko) in Paris and brings her home to Oklahoma, where the love begins to strain. Terrence Malick follows Neil's pull toward Jane (Rachel McAdams), an old flame from his hometown. Father Quintana (Javier Bardem) sees only pain and lost hope around him, and the film treats love and faith as the same unanswered need.
