The land the Lesters farm in rural Georgia once belonged to their planter ancestors, and no one in the family can say how it came to this. Jeeter Lester (Charley Grapewin) and his household of sharecroppers get by on slapstick and stubbornness while the bank plans to take the acreage for more profitable farming. John Ford keeps Jeeter right at the center, an old man holding to dirt that is no longer his to hold.
